New Building for the Parliament of India



For the inaugural issue of "Twenty-First Century Building Review", we examine an instant modern classic: the New Building for the Parliament of India. We will also take the opportunity to speculate about the future of democracy in the most populous country in the world.



The plans for the parliament are immaculate. Even without understanding how parliament functions or any architectural background, the plans are pleasing on the aesthetic level. They simply ooze with logic - displaying the balance between the three functions of the governmental building -Lok Sabha (the Lower House), Rajya Sabha (the Upper House), and Central Lounge. The building represents in its organization both the logic and structure of the government.
